The 2018 season was successful for Houston Astros slugger Alex Bregman. He started 157 games, hitting .286/.394/.532 with 51 doubles, 31 home runs, and 103 runs batted in.
He helped Houston make it to the postseason, and they did not have much trouble against the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS. However, they would have trouble putting away the Boston Red Sox.
Boston would beat Houston 4-1, advancing and then winning the World Series. Afterward, Bregman was not pleased losing to the Red Sox and stirred up a little controversy, via ESPN's David Schoenfield.
"After watching the Patiots win and with the Red Sox beating us last year, there's no other city that I would like to beat more this year than Boston," said Bregman.
Bregman felt the sting of the city eliminating them from the postseason and watching the New England Patriots go on to win a Super Bowl later that year. He wanted nothing more than to put the hurt on Boston during the 2019 season.
Boston's president was not happy with Alex Bregman and the Astros' after incident with Houston employee
During Game 1 of the ALCS, an Astros employee was removed from Fenway Park. The employee was spotted near Boston's dugout in the media-credentialed area where he had a camera.
However, the employee did not have a media credential, leading to confusion as to why he was even there in the first place. Houston's GM at the time, Jeff Luhnow explained that the team was being proactive and looking for suspicious activity. That did not sit well with Boston's president at the time, Dave Dombrowski.
"I don't like the implication that we were doing something that they were checking on when they were actually ... the ones who created a false credential, or asked for a credential, of somebody that's not supposed to have one" said Dombrowski.
During the 2017 season, the Red Sox were fined for illegally using an Apple watch in the dugout to relay signs against the New York Yankees. However, Houston was not in the clear either as rumors were swirling that they also had ways to relay signs in real time.
In 2019, the story would drop on Houston's sign-stealing scandal. It detailed how Houston used electronic means to steal opposing teams' signs and relay them to players like Alex Bregman and others at the plate.
