Thanks to hometown hero Anthony Volpe, the New York Yankees live to fight another day. Volpe lifted and inspired the Bombers in their 11-4 World Series Game 4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, cementing him in Yankee lore forever.

With the air sucked out of Yankee Stadium after Freddie Freeman's sixth-straight World Series home run, the 23-year-old upstart born and raised in the Big Apple hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the third inning that made the Bronx erupt with joy and relief. Volpe's slam inspired and powered the Yankees to extend their lives in baseball's biggest series, which is now standing at 3-1.

"Storybook stuff from Anthony Volpe," the MLB wrote on X.

A lifelong Yankee fan, Anthony Volpe has time and again shared about how much of a diehard he was growing up. The upstart shortstop also shared that he idolized former captain and Yankee legend Derek Jeter.

In the postgame interview by the Fox panel, Volpe joined the desk and was given the "My Dawg" T-shirt by Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz. This illicited a quick response from the former New York captain.

"No no no. Don't take that," Jeter told Volpe.

It was overall a funny situation, as for the first time in the series, Jeter had ammunition to fire back at longtime playing rival Ortiz. This is due to Big Papi taking a jab at both Jeter and Alex Rodriguez every time the Yankees lose.

This was banter between the old rivals, though, as Ortiz even took a photo of Jeter and Volpe to remember the momentous game.

Anthony Volpe conflicted about David Ortiz's gift

After a sensational game that had him finish with a stat line of two hits, four RBIs, three runs, a walk, two stolen bases and a grand slam for the ages, Anthony Volpe has certainly made believers out of the people who expected him to be "the next Derek Jeter."

His Game 4 heroics also merited him an interesting gift. A "My Dawg" shirt from Red Sox legend David Ortiz. The Boston legend has been handing out apparel for players that exemplified the characteristics of an athlete who has grit and a never-say-die attitude, thus the moniker of "dawg."

When asked about the token of appreciation from the Red Sox icon, the shortstop had an interesting reply.

"It's yet to be determined what I'll do. I can't wear it, it's got him in Red Sox stuff on it," Volpe said.

With just a few hours away before the start of Game 5, the Yankees need to reset and focus as they are not out of the woods yet and should still face the grim reality of their 2024 season coming to an end as early as tonight.
