Nolan Arenado is one of the most well-regarded defensive third basemen in baseball history. He has more than a few accolades to back up that claim, and he could be headed to the Hall of Fame when he retires.
Before that happens, Arenado is spending his offseason watching a documentary on another of the greatest third basemen in history: Mike Schmidt. The legendary player is in the Hall of Fame, where Arenado might someday join him.
While watching the documentary, Arenado posted an Instagram story with a simple reaction:
"Greatest."
Among players who spent a significant amount of time at third base, only Mel Ott, Alex Rodriguez and Rogers Hornsby had more bWAR all-time than Schmidt. The Philadelphia Phillies legend had 106.9 during his career, whereas Arenado has 56.7 thus far.
Nolan Arenado wants to win with potential new team
It is likely that Nolan Arenado will be traded this offseason. The third baseman doesn't fit with the rebuilding St. Louis Cardinals, and their front office has expressed a desire to get a deal done somewhere.
On the player front, Arenado is aware of and accepts the possibility of a trade. Despite his no-trade clause, the third baseman is open to go elsewhere. He's also willing to adapt and change a few things, depending on his new destination.
His agent Joel Wolfe said via ESPN:
"Nolan wants to win, and there's more details, but that's really between them and I don't want to have any effect on what [Cardinals president of baseball operations John] Mozeliak is trying to do. Nolan's willing to strongly consider it, if it's the right place to go, but he's not going to go just anywhere."
He continued:
"He has a full no-trade clause, so he has that right, and he's a veteran player and we hope something good happens, but he's not going to approve and move his family and go play (just anywhere)."
The Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros have been tabbed as potential landing spots for the former All-Star and Gold Glove third baseman.
