Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been with the New York Yankees for just over a day, but the All-Star slugger has already made an impact in the iconic pinstripes. He even made a hilarious admission following his multi-homer game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
The Yankees were expected to be in a tough game in their series opener against the team with the best record in the major leagues this year. However, it turned out in a rout, with the Yankees outscoring the Phillies 14-4 at Citizens Bank Park.
Chisholm went deep for the first time in Yankees colors after a solo home run off Phillies ace Zack Wheeler in the second inning. He added a second home run in the ninth inning, a two-run homer using Yankees captain Aaron Judge's bat. However, the newest Yankees recruit isn't too enthused about using the bat again:
"Definitely not gonna use that again tomorrow, that bat was so heavy!" Chisholm Jr. said on using Judge's bat.
With the Yankees leading 12-4 in the game, the Phillies put catcher Garrett Stubbs on the mound in the ninth inning. Chisholm asked Judge for his bat after seeing Stubbs on the mound and the Yankees captain obliged.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. ticks all the boxes in new Yankees role
Jazz Chisholm Jr. made his Yankees debut as an outfielder in the series finale against the Boston Red Sox. However, he was moved to third base for Monday's game, and the former Miami Marlins star didn't look out of place in his new position.
The new Yankees third baseman was seen practicing against ground balls ahead of his first game at third base and felt comfortable, saying:
“I just felt like, if I go out there and I get ready on time, it doesn’t matter how hard the ball is hit – I’ll be ready. I just felt like it was really comfortable being over there. My pre-pitch was pretty good today every pitch. I felt really comfortable today.”
Meanwhile, Yankees captain Aaron Judge also continued his hot streak at the plate, smoking two home runs on the night to take his tally to 39 this season. Judge has words of praise for Jazz Chisholm Jr.:
“He’s electric. He’s excited to be here, having fun. He’s made a big impact,” Judge said.
The Bronx Bombers (63-45) are just one game behind the Baltimore Orioles (63-44) and will be looking to register a second consecutive series win in the second game against the Phillies on Tuesday.
