The Los Angeles Dodgers received a concerning update on Max Muncy's injury on Tuesday. The third baseman has been out of action since his game against the San Francisco Giants on May 15.
Muncy, currently sidelined due to an oblique injury, gave a blunt update on his rehab during an appearance on the "Foul Territory" podcast on Tuesday.
"We're hanging in there," said Muncy. "Being hurt is probably the worst thing ever. Not progressing as fast as I would like, but with an oblique, it's just you have to give it time. There's nothing you could really do."
Although Muncy's answer displayed his frustration with the injury, he admitted that there was nothing else to do but be patient to recover his strength.
"I think an oblique is possibly the worst position player injury you could have because there's nothing you could do to strengthen it, help it get better, or help it heal quickly. You just have to sit there and wait," Muncy added.
Max Muncy was one of many bright spots for the Dodgers at the start of the season. However, he was struggling at the plate right before his injury last month. He was placed on the 10-day injured list before the Dodgers' game against the Cincinnati Reds in May.
Max Muncy unsure of a timeline for his return
The two-time All-Star had nine home runs, eight doubles and 26 RBIs before his setback. He suffered a similar injury in 2021 but bounced back after making a swift recovery.
Max Muncy suffered a setback in one of his training drills during his rehab, further derailing his recovery. He believes that it is not possible to put a timeline for his return at the moment.
“I had two good days of full batting practice, where I didn’t feel anything at all," Muncy said on Sunday (via dodgerblue.com). "And then the third day, it flared up. It’s one of those things where my body was telling me to slow things down. I don’t think anybody has a timetable, because we can’t really put one on it.”
The Dodgers have used a combination of Kiké Hernández, Chris Taylor and Miguel Rojas to fill in for Max Muncy at third base. Hernandez featured at the base during the Dodgers' series win against the New York Yankees, while Rojas replaced him for the series opener against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
