A public feud by the owning family of the San Diego Padres could ruin their offseason, one MLB source said. After Peter Seidler died before the 2024 season, his widow, Sheel, sued two of her brothers-in-law for breaches of fiduciary duty and fraud.

Roki Sasaki is highly sought after in San Diego, reportedly being their top priority this offseason. They may trade Luis Arraez and extensions for Michael King and Jackson Merrill could be on the way. All of that is in jeopardy now.

One MLB source said via The Athletic:

“Nothing good is going to come of this. Even the combatant that wins is not going to look good.”

This was a key offseason for the Padres, one that had been slow but quiet. Now, they're in the news for all the wrong reasons. The team, to its credit, is trying to conduct business as usual.

One agent added that this can only negatively impact players:

“You’ve got to take that into account and say everything is something that has to be discussed. Is it going to impact what they offer me? Is it going to impact if they build a winning team around me? Is it going to impact a lot of different things?"

They failed to reach an arbitration agreement with King, the former New York Yankees pitcher. This isn't uncommon, but it's hard to ignore the timing, with the disagreement coming after the Seidler family feud went public.

Peter Seidler's widow wants to see the Padres spend big

After Peter Seidler, who spent a ton of money and assets to bring in players like Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and others, died, the team was reportedly looking to reverse course and shed payroll.

They did so by trading Soto to the Yankees, and they've been pretty quiet in free agency. Sheel Seidler said in her lawsuit (via The Athletic):

“The emphasis in the press reports on the Padres cutting salary, lowering their expectations, and implicitly abandoning their all-out pursuit of a World Series championship would have been a gut punch to Peter."

Whether or not she's successful remains to be seen, but the dispute is firmly in the public eye now.
