Masataka Yoshida was the player of the game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 5-3 at Yankee Stadium in the opening game of their three-game series. Yoshida smashed a two-run blast at a crucial moment and helped the Red Sox tie the game with the Yankees.

At the top of the ninth inning, Yoshida smashed the game-tying homer against Clay Holmes. It was a strong comeback for the Red Sox as they went on to secure a 5-3 victory. Ceddane Rafaela smashed another two-run homer against Tommy Kahnle to put the team ahead for good.

It was an unforgettable moment for Yoshida and by far one of the biggest highlights of his career. In a postgame interview with NESN, the slugger reflected on his performance with his team:

"Situation-wise in this stadium, you know Yankees stadium, I think that's one of the biggest highlights of my career with the Red Sox," Yoshida said via his interpreter. "It's huge obviously to be able to hit a home run in that clutch situation and you know just share the happiness with the teammates, that's big."

Red Sox manager Alex Corra praises Masataka Yoshida

Masataka Yoshida has struggled to make ends meet over the past 75 appearances at the plate. The slugger could not go deep for a long time but has broken his home run scoreless streak.

Red Sox manager Alex Corra praised Yoshida for his significant contribution to the team's success:

“Masa, he’s finding his rhythm," Corra said. "We know he's a good hitter. He hasn't hit for power this season, but the short porch in right, and he got a good pitch to hit and drove it."

Yoshida has just three home runs this season with a batting clip of .259. He has a .327 OBP with a .672 OPS. In 147 appearances at the plate, he has driven in 17 runs and recorded 16 RBIs.

It's been a tough 2024 MLB start for Yoshida, but his crucial hit saved the Red Sox from defeat against their big rivals. The Red Sox (48-39) are currently third in the AL East standings behind the Yankees (54-36) and Baltimore Orioles (56-32).

Corra and his squad hope to get back in the playoff race and seal the series, while the Yankees will look to rebound and tie it up on Saturday.
