Monday’s game saw the Seattle Mariners win 5-4 against the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers were leading the game 4-1 in the first eight innings.
However, in the ninth inning, Yankees pitcher Clay Holmes gave up four runs to the Mariners snapping the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak.
Talking about the game in an interview, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said:
“I mean sure, But you know that’s baseball. I thought he threw the ball well again. I mean just didn’t really balance out way in that inning. He was on the attack.”
“A couple swinging buns on them bloop and then they put together some good at-bats there to finish off. Obviously a big rally. But yeah it’s one of those things that happens every now and then."
Marcus Stroman pitched seven scoreless innings but was replaced by Luke Weaver in the eighth after allowing a solo homer to the Mariners’ Dominic Canzone. In the ninth inning, Clay Holmes took the mound giving three singles and one sacrifice fly.
The New York Yankees started their 2-0 lead in the first inning with Alex Verdugo’s double. Another hit from Verdugo in the fifth inning brought in a run.
Jon Berti contributed with an RBI single that scored a run in the eighth inning. The Yankees with a record of 33 wins and 16 losses, are leading the AL East.
Clay Holmes reflects on his performance taking responsibility for the loss
With the New York Yankees’ loss, Clay Holmes also had his 15 ⅔ scoreless innings streak ended. Discussing his performance, Holmes said (via MLB.com):
“That one’s on me. I feel like I made some good pitches, and definitely some balls found some holes, but I was ahead on a couple of guys there 0-2, 1-2, and put them on base. They could have been big outs.”
“It was one of those outings where I feel like my stuff was there. Maybe trying to go for a little too much chase with a couple of guys there. Some balls found some holes and it didn’t go our way there.”
At the beginning of the season, Clay Holmes had a streak of 20 consecutive appearances without allowing any runs, the second longest in the team’s history. Holmes was traded to the Yankees in 2021 by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
