The Texas Rangers downed their AL West rival Houston Astros in the series opener on Monday, courtesy of Caleb Ferguson's blown save. The Rangers' Josh Smith came up clutch for the team in the 10th inning, smashing a walk-off home run off Ferguson.
While the Rangers fans were ecstatic after the victory and the Astros faithful lamented the near miss, New York Yankees fans celebrated for a peculiar reason.
The Yankees fans mocked the Astros' Ferguson because of his ties with the Bronx Bombers. Ferguson was traded to the Yankees from the Dodgers earlier this season and was subsequently traded to the Astros on July 30 at the trade deadline.
Yankees fans gleefully thanked Ferguson for seemingly sabotaging the Astros, who are one of the Yankees' top rivals for the AL pennant.
"Thanks, Caleb, out there doing God's work."
"Sleeper agent."
"This is the biggest contribution Caleb Ferguson could've given the Yankees," mocked another Yankees fan.
Meanwhile, several Yankees fans also pointed to Josh Smith's walk-off home run, another ex-Yankee playing in the game.
"Smith a former Yankee too… (and is better than Volpe)," wrote a fan.
"Two ex-Yankees making contributions tonight," opined another fan.
"Man I wish we kept Smith and he took Gleybers job….send me to that universe," wondered a Yankees fan.
A former Yankees pick comes to the Rangers' rescue
Josh Smith was a second-round pick for the New York Yankees in the 2019 draft. However, he never made any senior appearances for the team despite impressing in the minor leagues. He was traded to the Texas Rangers in 2021 in a deal that involved Joey Gallo and Joely Rodríguez.
Josh Smith made his MLB debut for the reigning World Series winner in 2022 and has been part of the roster since. The walk-off home run against rivals Astros was his 12th home run of the season and his first walk-off homer of his career.
"I knew Cory was behind me [in the lineup], so they're probably going to try to attack me," Smith said per SI. "So he grooved one down the middle. It's my first ever walk off home run, ever, so that's pretty cool. And then to do it against the rival division team is pretty sweet."
Just like last season, the Rangers are involved in a tight race for the AL West with the Seattle Mariners leading and the Astros in second. The win puts them just 3.5 games behind the Astros with two games remaining in a crucial series against their division rivals.
