The New York Mets are arguably the hottest team in the MLB right now, as they recorded their fourth straight victory by beating the Atlanta Braves 8-4 at Citi Field on Friday night. As a result, the Mets have overtaken the Braves to move into second place in the National League East, thereby claiming the top spot in the Wild Card race.

Naturally, Mets supporters are buzzing with excitement right now after a dismal opening two months for the team. Their joy could be gauged from their ecstatic reactions on social media.

The 2024 season began with five consecutive defeats for the New York Mets, although they were able to post a 12-8 record by April 20. However, they then went on a miserable 10-25 run, which put the team well out of the playoff hunt as they had dropped to 10 games below .500 by the end of May. A full-blown crisis looked imminent for the team with the highest payroll in MLB.

However, NY made a brilliant resurgence instead and has posted a 33-15 record since May 30. Earlier this week, the Mets swept the New York Yankees for the year by winning all four games to claim the local bragging rights. On Friday, the Mets jumped to second place in the NL East after surpassing the Atlanta Braves, who were touted as a preseason favorite to clinch the World Series this year.

The delight of the Mets supporters was clear to see from the messages they posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"We own the Braves and Yankees," one Mets fan claimed.

"I'm a Mets fan. We’re not winning the World Series this year, but it’s hard not to be excited about our future," wrote another fan.

The positive messages for the New York Mets continued to pour in from their fans on social media.

"The Mets were a good baseball team that just needed a mentality shift," posted one fan.

"They did that to us in 2022. Kind of wanted to return the favor," said another fan.

"The Mets should be proud of coming back, but now they need to defend their spot for the next two months roughly," another fan said.

The New York Mets will take on the Atlanta Braves once again on Saturday for the second meeting of their four-game series.

Even though it seemed unthinkable not too long ago, the New York Mets have a genuine possibility of overtaking the Philadelphia Phillies if they continue their recent form. The Phillies hold a nine-game lead over the Mets at the moment, but the two teams have been trending in different directions of late.

The Phillies remain the best team in the MLB with their 64-39 record. However, they only have a 7-10 record since July 4 and have lost five of the seven games following the All-Star break.

The Mets were 17 games behind the division leaders on June 11 before it embarked on a seven-game winning streak. They have a 10-3 record since July 9, including an ongoing four-game winning run.
