The San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill is set to show off a Star Wars lightsaber-themed bat in the MLB Players Weekend. The rookie's bat features a handle similar to the weapon showcased in the popular franchise, and the barrel area glows in the dark.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), MLB showed off Merrill's new weapon.
Players' Weekend is usually divided into three segments. Friday is when players interact with the fans in fun activities, Saturday is dedicated to charity and Sunday is when players recognize and appreciate people in their lives who have helped them in their baseball journeys.
Padres keep winning as Jackson Merrill's claims for Rookie of the Year get louder
The San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by 8 runs to 2 on Wednesday, sealing a three-game series sweep on their visitors. The hosts took control of proceedings early at Petco Park, with Jake Cronenworth hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Jackson Merrill was once again at his best for the home side, recording 2 RBIs in the game and running one in over home plate himself. Merrill's most recent display is very much in keeping with his strong season so far, as he competes with the Pittsburgh Pirates phenom Paul Skenes and Chicago Cubs star Shota Imanaga to win the Rookie of the Year.
In his first season in the big leagues, Jackson is batting at a .288 average, with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs.
San Diego head to Denver next to take on the Colorado Rockies. Currently second in the standings for the National League Wildcard behind the Arizona Diamondbacks, fans will be hoping their side can keep up their strong form and seal a potential playoff spot.
