On Wednesday, MLB insiders Trevor Plouffe and Chris Rose discussed the San Diego Padres 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers to clinch a spot in the postseason. With a 91-66 record, the Padres' sit atop the NL Wildcard standings with five games to play.
The play to end Tuesday's game saw Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth and Donovan Solano turn a triple play off Miguel Rojas' sharply hit ground ball to strand two Dodgers runners in the blink of an eye while preventing Shohei Ohtani from coming up to bat.
"Don't think I'll be asking Miggy Ro about hitting into a game ending triple play and leaving Shohei Ohtani on deck in a 4-2 game," Chris said on Baseball Edition. [3:18]
"That hurts, but there's nothing you can really do. He hit the ball hard. I can't believe that happened. You have to give credit [to San Diego]. You knew he wasn't going to bunt, because then they'd just walk Shohei, but Machado was still playing up just in case. He had to be playing there to turn that triple play." Trevor added [3:25]
Jake Cronenworth homers as Padres celebrate playoff qualification at home
In Tuesday's win, Padres starting pitcher Michael King threw five scoreless innings. The only run the hosts scored during King's time on the mound was a throwing error, which allowed Ohtani to score.
Jake Cronenworth hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning which ultimately proved to be the difference. He also registered an RBI double in the fourth inning to score the fourth run for the visitors.
San Diego takes on LA in the second game of the series on Wednesday. Dylan Cease (Padres) and Jack Flaherty (Dodgers) will be on the mound in what is expected to be a fascinating pitcher's duel.
