Panama completed their Pool A campaign in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) with a 2-0 win against Italy at the Tokyo Dome Stadium on Friday. Fans were joyed by the occasion and expressed their support on social media.
The win was quite a comprehensive one for the Panamese as this was the first scoreless win for a team in the Pool. The Italian batting lineup failed to show up as the pitchers shut stop. Two runs were scored for the South American side on the back of a solo home run in the third and a single RBI in the seventh.
The win takes the team to a .500 win % with a 2-2 record. They had earlier won a game against the hosts Chinese Taipei on the opening day before losing two consecutive games against heavyweights in the Pool, Netherlands, and Cuba. Since they are the first team to complete, Panama will have to play the waiting game as they look toward other results to find out whether they will make it past the first round.
Fans enjoyed the occasion and took to Twitter to share their reactions.
Pool A has heated up in the WBC as all teams are still alive in the competition and have a chance of qualifying.
The ending received quite the praise from fans too as a double play from the Panamese ended Italy's ninth inning.
Panama hoping to make it to the second round for the first time in history
Panama will be looking for all the odds to fall in their favor as they look to make it to the quarterfinals. If they are able to make it through, this will be the first time they qualify, having previously exited the competition in the 2006 and 2009 editions, in the first round. They will keep a close eye on the game between the hosts Chinese Taipei and Cuba on Sunday.
