Paul Goldschmidt signed a one-year, $12.5 million contract with the New York Yankees last month although Pete Alonso still remains unsigned.

As per reports, Alonso is seeking a long-term deal worth around $200 million, but no team has forked up the money that he is looking for as yet. Goldschmidt said he has no understanding of why the four-time All-Star first baseman has not been signed up by any team, as he is one of the best players in his position.

On Tuesday, Paul Goldschmidt appeared in a video interview for SNY in which he took questions from the fans. He was asked by a caller why there are no contracts of $200 million to $300 million offered to first basemen, considering that Pete Alonso is still a free agent despite being one of the most productive players from an offensive standpoint.

"I just try to keep my head down and play," Goldschmidt said. "This is my first time through free agency, so I don't really know what he's going through.
"As far as the finances and economics of it, that's a question I don't know enough about to really speak to," he added. "But wherever he ends up, that team is really going to be a lucky team."

As things stand, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is set to be the highest-paid first baseman for the upcoming season with an annual salary of $28.8 million. On the other hand, Kris Bryant signed the largest free agent contract for a first baseman when he joined the Colorado Rockies for a seven-year, $182 million deal in 2022.

With over 2000 hits, 1000 RBIs, and 300 home runs over his 14-year career so far, Paul Goldschmidt seems well on track to eventually end up in the Hall of Fame. The 37-year-old veteran is also a seven-time All-Star, with five Silver Sluggers and four Gold Gloves, and was named the National League MVP in 2022. He feels Pete Alonso can go on to have a great career in the MLB, too.

"He's an amazing player," Goldschmidt said. "I've got to know him as well. I think wherever he ends up, he's going to have a great career. He's already had one."

So far, Pete Alonso has made four All-Star appearances in his career with the New York Mets. He set the rookie record by hitting 53 home runs in 2019 en route to winning the NL Rookie of the Year.
