Paul Skenes on his way to New York? Not so fast, as his girlfriend Olivia Dunne teased about a move for the pitcher who put everyone on notice with his pitching in his rookie season. The Pirates, who picked Skenes first overall in 2023 MLB draft, called up Skenes in May to make his major league debut against the Chicago Cubs.
Almost no pitcher has been as good as the rookie since then. Skenes, despite being a rookie, was asked to start for the NL side in the 2024 All-Star game. As expected, he won the NL Rookie of the Year and came third in NL Cy Young voting. He had Livvy by his side during the award announcement.
On Tuesday, Dunne posted a TikTok video where she was vibing to the song "BMF" by SGA. The particular lyric used in that video was "Young and fine and dark and handsome," a subtle nod to her boyfriend, Skenes.
What caught the attention more was the comments section in which one fan suggested "Paul Skenes to the Yankees confirmed," referencing the New York Yankees' history of acquiring elite pitchers.
Dunne’s response, “Cole is reaching,” hinted that it was a bit too far-fetched from the fan to think he will go the Yankees
Olivia Dunne picks "favorite" moment from Paul Skenes' rookie season
Paul Skenes had social media star and LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne by his side during the NL Rookie of the Year announcement in November. Skenes emerged as the winner, receiving 23 first-place votes out of the possible 30.
The announcement was followed by a one-on-one interaction with his girlfriend who was asked to pick her "favorite" moment from his rookie season. After taking a while to think, she chose Skenes' Wrigley Field appearance.
“My favorite moment from Paul’s rookie season was when he pitched the first time at Wrigley Field,” she said. “I wasn’t there but I was screaming at my phone, jumping up and down. I was so excited. He did amazing.”
Both of Paul Skenes' first two starts were against the Chicago Cubs. Following his PNC Park start, he was on the road to face the Cubs, where he pitched six innings of no-hit ball, striking out 11 and allowing only one walk.
