Justin Verlander's wife Kate Upton has skills surpassing her modeling and acting profession. Upton comes from a sports-oriented family. Her mother Shelley (née Davis) is a former Texas state tennis champion, and her father, Jeff Upton, was a high school athletics director.
The model herself is a five-time junior equestrian World Champion and is an avid sports fan, having married a pitcher who has won three Cy Youngs. She also aced when matched up against Jimmy Fallon for a Flip Cup challenge.
During Upton's August 2019 appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," the host asked the four-time Sports Illustrated cover model if she has been playing the flip cup challenge after beating him. Much to her dismay, nobody wanted to play her, knowing they'd lose.
"You know, I am sad to say, I think people are actually scared to play me," Upton said (0:30). "Everyone saw me play you, and they were like, 'Oh.' They're scurred. Yeah, I think -- I think I'm just kind of the champion. At least that's what I like to think."
Kate Upton finds Justin Verlander's baseball schedule "wild" and "insane"
Kate Upton didn't know much about baseball when she started dating Justin Verlander, who most notably played for the Detroit Tigers and the Houston Astros. The MLB regular season has 162 games, the most among all North American sports.
This leads to baseball stars often missing time with their family as they get completely attached to the game especially from April to October. Upton appeared on the "Chicks in the Office" podcast in July where she talked about being a baseball wife and keeping up with the "insane" schedule of Verlander (1:18:20):
"Being a baseball wife is absolutely insane. The schedule is wild; it's so long. I didn't know. I didn't know I accidentally fell in love. I had no idea that they were—I'm sorry, wait, there's how many games? Yeah, I was like, wait, I thought this was like a cute summer thing, two months of baseball season. It's summer, like, this is eight months.
"They're doing 163 games, no off days, no consecutive off days, only Mondays and Thursdays. It's my favorite; this is my favorite. I'm like, I don't see him. Especially when you start getting into late playoffs, when baseball is so exciting, but you're like, I haven't seen my husband in a month. They better win; it better be worth it."
Currently, baseball is in its offseason. But since Justin Verlander is a free agent, he'll have to devote some time with his agent to find him his next team.
