As the MLB offseason moves on, the New York Mets find themselves in a difficult situation regarding their star first baseman, Pete Alonso. Recent reports show that the Mets and Alonso are experiencing a "sizable gap" in contract negotiations, leading to frustration among fans.
With the Mets' recent big investment in superstar Juan Soto, the question arises whether Alonso’s future with the team is secure.
According to sources, including Jon Heyman of the New York Post on Thursday, there is a "sizable gap" in talks between the Mets and 4x All-Star Alonso. Heyman remarked that it "doesn't mean he's gone," but "no quick deal appears at hand."
As per CBS Sports, the Mets reportedly offered a seven-year deal worth $158 million last summer, which Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, known for getting big deals for his clients, turned down in hopes of securing a more lucrative contract.
Back in March, Mets owner, Steve Cohen commented on the situation surrounding Alonso's future:
“We haven’t had any discussion and I think at this point, for Pete, it’s best for him to go and have a great year and not be distracted,” Cohen told reporters including AP News.
Some Mets fans are not happy and took to X on Thursday and Friday to show their frustration regarding Pete Alonso's future and Soto's price tag.
"Dude is a**, not worth it," one fan wrote responding to MLB insider Carlos Baerga's report on Alonso.
Another fan expressed serious concerns regarding the money spent on Soto said:
"All that Soto money has a cost, after all. The odds of Soto being anywhere close to the value of that contract, all things considered, are incredibly low. Same Old Mets!" responding to SNY's post about Heyman's report about Pete Alonso.
After securing Juan Soto with a record-breaking historic deal, the New York Mets have all their focus on Pete Alonso
On Dec. 8, Juan Soto agreed to terms with the New York Mets and signed a record-breaking 15-year deal worth $765 million. After spending only one season with his former team, the New York Yankees, Soto became a free agent at the end of the 2024 season as he only had a one-year deal with them after being traded by the San Diego Padres.
Soto had a great 2024 season with the Yankees as he hit .288/.419/.569 in 157 games played. He showed great hitting ability and hit 41 home runs throughout the season. Soto had 109 RBIs and stole 7 bases.
After getting the signature of Soto, the Mets have now all of their attention on Pete Alonso. According to former MLB infielder Carlos Baerga,
“Alonso is expected to sign soon."
The Mets have reportedly offered Alonso a 3-year contract worth $90 million with opt-out options. Alonso's camp is reportedly looking for a $200 million deal.
Meanwhile, in the 2024 season, Pete Alonso played all 162 games for the Mets. He managed a .240/.329/.459 line. He had 88 RBIs with 34 homers and three stolen bases.
Alonso also hit a clutch home run in the deciding game of the NL Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Oct. 3 to send the Mets to the NLDS. Eventually, the Mets fell in the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
