The San Francisco Giants missing out on Corbin Burnes has left them with some room to splurge their cash elsewhere. They could be looking to add some infield depth with a possible pursuit of Pete Alonso.
As reported by Giants insider Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the team is interested in Alonso to address the 1B/DH position.
"The Giants remain in the market for a first baseman or DH, too, and four-time All-Star Pete Alonso, who has hit 226 home runs in six seasons with the Mets, is on their radar," Slusser wrote.
Currently, LaMonte Wade Jr. is expected to be the team's primary first baseman. The Giants were also expected to bump up young prospect Bryce Eldridge, who is set to make his Triple-A debut this season, to share the workload with Wade as the season progresses. However, if they sign Pete Alonso, there are two combinations that the Giants can look to achieve.
The first one includes a solid Eldridge-Alonso combo starting in 2025, platooning the first base and DH position. Wade Jr. is expected to hit free agency and sign elsewhere, thus leaving room for the Giants to bump up their prospect while also an experienced figure like Alonso shepherding him.
On the other hand, if Eldridge is looked at as a prospective trade candidate, then Alonso could become their regular first baseman. However, this seems less plausible as teams haven't been keen on providing a long-term contract to Pete Alonso and if he doesn't receive his reportedly expected amount of more than $175 million, then he may choose to take multiple opt-out clauses in his contract.
Possible obstacles to San Francisco Giants signing Pete Alonso
Pete Alonso hit 80 home runs in the last two years, but it was at an average of just .229. He is looking to get back into his usual slugging self, but for that, Oracle Park might not be the best destination. The ballpark is considered a tough place to hit for right-handed sluggers.
Moreover, the Giants will also have to give up another draft pick as Alonso had declined a qualifying offer from the Mets. They have already given up three draft picks by signing Willy Adames and extending Matt Chapman this offseason and Blake Snell in the previous year.
The Mets have reportedly offered $90 million over three years to Alonso. The Giants could match that and go beyond, but it all depends on how long the contract will be for and if at all Alonso would like to opt out at any point.
