The New York Mets received plaudits from fans and analysts for their clubhouse culture after a strong second half in the 2024 season that saw the Mets eliminated from the postseason in the ALCS by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While some players have shone with their leadership qualities at Citi Field, former Mets outfielder, and first baseman, Mark Canha shared the peculiar eating habits of his former teammates.
In a recent chat on New York Post Sports with senior analyst Jon Heyman, Canha talked about how his love for food grew over the years and the teammates who shared the same enthusiasm.
He said (8:40 onwards):
"I got into food growing up in the Bay Area is a very diverse place, and you're exposed to a lot of different cultures and food traditions and such. Then I went to Berkeley and there's so many different food options near Berkeley and just kind of introduced to a lot of different Asian foods there.
"There was just like a passion of mine ever since then, then Instagram kind of gained popularity, and I realized what I could do with food and Instagram and kind of use it in a way that was fun for me."
While Heyman mentioned Canha's former manager (at Oakland Athletics), Bob Melvin, as a foodie, the former Met shared a few other names.
"There are a lot of guys that go out and try and get a good meal. Pete Alonso comes to mind. You mentioned Bob Melvin, he's a big food guy. Francisco Lindor likes to eat really well. Jed Lowrie was really into food. Just a lot of guys and it's fun. I think this year, I remember, Casey Mize with Detroit is kind of a foodie so there's a few of us out there."
Mark Canha weighs in on Pete Alonso's free agency
The Mets made the biggest splash in MLB history by signing Juan Soto on a record-breaking $765 million deal in the offseason. However, the front office seems reluctant to go big for Pete Alonso.
According to reports, Pete Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, is seeking a contract of around $200 million. However, the Mets are a part of the valuation of their former star.
Mark Canha weighed in on the situation, hailing Alonso as the best hitter he has seen. He said:
"I think he's gonna get his, I think he's going to get what he deserves at the end of the day. If you've watched Pete play a lot, I think you appreciate him more. He's one of the best hitters I've ever seen in my life.”
Despite Alonso's free agency seemingly in a lul, the Mets are still reported as the most likely destination for the All-Star slugger.
