Pete Alonso isn't too far from signing a contract. According to Carlos Baerga, the New York Mets have offered Alonso a three-year, $90 million deal with annual opt-out options.
However, Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, are reportedly looking for a deal upwards of $200 million. Baerga claimed that the NL East team is seeking to re-sign the first baseman on a short-term, high AAV deal rather than a long-term $200 million contract.
Mets president David Stearns seems to be using the lack of significant interest in Pete Alonso to his advantage.
The New York Yankees, who were thought to be suitors, signed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal. The Astros signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year deal, removing them from the race to sign Alonso.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s impending free agency impacting Pete Alonso's market
While Pete Alonso is a premium hitter in his own right, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s free agency next year is hurting his market. Teams are seemingly reserving their resources for the Toronto Blue Jays first baseman, who may sign a deal next year worth $400-500 million.
Bleacher Report's Jake Brown went on a limb and said that the Mets should wait for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next year instead of signing Alonso to a long-term contract.
"I want the best player that's going to get you a ring. I think Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is light years better than Pete Alonso and four years younger," Brown said.
"Now, it's going to cost you $400 million dollars. It's going to be 10 years, $400 (million) where the number starts next winter, and obviously, you're not a lock to get him. If you're trusting in Steve Cohen who just gave out the biggest deal in sports history, why not trust him to go get Vladdy?"
While the current production of both hitters is nearly identical, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has age by his side.
