Things have not gone well for the New York Mets, but Pete Alonso did get some positive news recently. The slugger hurt his wrist after being hit by a pitch in the first inning of a game on Wednesday. A CT scan revealed no fracture of the bone, so Alonso likely will not have to spend a lot of time on the shelf.
Pete Alonso was struck by a James Paxton pitch and could not continue. Alonso seemed to be in immediate pain and expressed some frustration. He began walking to first, but he never made it there before trainers came and escorted him into the clubhouse.
The news came after it was revealed that Edwin Diaz would have to spend some time on the Injured List. Fortunately, there's no major damage to Alonso's wrist, so an IL stint remains unlikely.
In the aftermath, Mark Vientos moved over to first base. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, via SNY:
"I feel good [having him play first base]. He’s played there before, he’s had reps and I feel comfortable if we need to. We have to wait for Pete first."
Alonso exited the contest very early, and the Mets could not recover and were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Mets front office isn't changing stance on Pete Alonso
The pending free agency of Pete Alonso has loomed over his and the team's poor start. He is a prime candidate for trade since he's an expiring contract on a bad team.
The wrist injury might complicate things, especially if it turns out to be more damaging than initially thought. However, front office executive David Stearns said, via ESPN:
"Nothing's changed with Pete's situation. Our goal is, on a daily basis, to help this team succeed as much as possible so we can win as many games as possible."
Stearns was brought in to help facilitate a turnaround and to make hard decisions. One of them will revolve squarely around Alonso, who is a fan-favorite who has expressed a desire to stay in New York.
