“Pete Alonso just doesn’t make sense in Anaheim” – Ex-MLB slugger explains why the slugger doesn’t fit with the Angels’ roster

The Los Angeles Angels are one of the teams in the hunt to acquire free-agent slugger Pete Alonso. While the team has Nolan Schanuel at first base, insiders suggest it could move him to the outfield.

With Alonso still on the open market and many other first-basemen having already signed, things are looking good for the Halos. They would love to add another power bat alongside Mike Trout and Jorge Soler.

However, former big-league slugger Kevin Frandsen does not believe acquiring Alonso would make much sense. He explained his reasoning recently on MLB Network Radio.

"It's funny because you're trying to draw interest from teams. It just doesn't make sense in Anaheim, it doesn't," said Frandsen.

While Alonso would be an ideal fit for most teams, the Angels would have to move some pieces around to make it work.

"Everyone should want a Pete Alonso, but what if your roster is built with Nolan Schanuel, Jorge Soler, Mike Trout, with an uknown in Anthony Rendon? How is that a fit? Tell me how that is a fit" said Frandsen.

There are much better fits for the Halos this winter. Multiple insiders do not see the two sides coming together on a deal.

Other options outside of Pete Alonso should intrigue the Angels' front office

While Pete Alonso is one of the best free agents still without a team for 2025, there are still other game-changing free agents out there. One of these players seems to fit the club's agenda more than others.

Anthony Santander is looking for a new club after his tenure with the Baltimore Orioles ended this past season. He would be the ideal fit for a club searching for another outfielder.

Santander started 155 games in 2024, hitting .235/.308/.506 with a career-high 44 home runs and 102 runs batted in. He was vital in Baltimore's success last season, winning 91 games and making the postseason.

With that type of season, the Halos are not the only team interested in the slugger. The Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and a few others have also shown interest, with Toronto offering him a contract recently.

The offer was reportedly not close to what Santander hoped to sign for this winter, so L.A. still has some time. He would be a player that would excite the fanbase and help them move past mediocrity.
