The calendar has already changed to 2025, yet four-time All-Star Pete Alonso remains without a new contract. The hard-hitting first baseman remains one of the top free agents remaining on the open market, yet it's unclear where, when and how much Alonso will be able to sign for.

On Monday, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on ESPN that Alonso may be unable to secure the long-term deal he was likely looking for. Instead, he could lean towards a shorter-term contract. While a long-term deal may provide Alonso with security down the road, if he opts to sign a short-term deal somewhere, he will likely see himself earn a higher salary per season with opt-out clauses included in the contract.

Passan pointed out that several clubs may be willing to sign Alonso to a short-term, higher AAV contract as opposed to a long-term deal. While the New York Mets might be considered the favorites to re-sign Alonso, Passan mentioned the likes of the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks as other contenders.

Needless to say, MLB fans across the globe were surprised to see that Alonso might need to settle on a short-term deal. Fans on social media shared their thoughts on Alonso's free agency while also taking their shots at super-agent Scott Boras in the process.

"He never should've hired Boras," one fan posted.
"He and his fancy new agent really overvalued his worth here," another fan shared.
"I'm laughing at how everyone is yelling at Cohen. Boras put Pete in this position, and Pete refuses to face reality. If Pete loves it here so much, take whatever the Mets are offering. Otherwise, go somewhere else," one more fan added.

Despite being one of baseball's most prolific home run hitters, the market for Alonso may not have been what the slugger and his agent expected. At 30 years old, there have been concerns about how the first baseman will age, which could be a major reason behind his inability to secure a long-term contract. Despite all of this, some fans believe that the Mets should re-sign Alonso.

"That’s f***ing ridiculous man…. Just make the man a Met for life and move on," one fan said.
"No other team is gonna give him an opt out and surrender picks on a short term deal - just sign with the Mets already," another fan posted.
"Take a 3/$90 deal with opt outs after first 2 years. Put up a strong season, break Mets HR record and try again next year," one more fan added.

Pete Alonso endured a rough 2024 campaign, which could be another reason behind his long offseason

While there are questions about how Pete Alonso will age over the course of a long-term deal, his disappointing 2024 season cannot be ignored. Even though Alonso trails only Aaron Judge for the most home runs since 2019, he is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career.

Alonso played all 162 games in 2024. However, the game action did not help him rack up massive numbers at the plate. Alonso posted a .240 batting average with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs, along with 172 strikeouts. While those numbers are solid, they may not encourage teams to spend upwards of $200 million on a first baseman in his 30s.
