The New York Mets are keen on bringing back Pete Alonso, although he has not generated much interest from other teams. As a result, his agent, Scott Boras, has reportedly put the first baseman up for a short-term deal in the free agent market, with the player reportedly having already rejected a long-term deal from the Mets.
Mets sportscaster Evan Roberts predicted the team will line up a three-year contract for Pete Alonso in the near future. According to him, the deal will contain an opt-out clause at the end of each season but with a depreciating value adding up to $82 million.
Evan Roberts is the co-host of the afternoon show on WFAN. On Sunday, he gave his thoughts on the possible contract that the Mets will offer Alonso. He said [36:52 - 42:00]:
"Scott Boras has probably said, "Okay, we'll go on a short-term deal. We want $50 million a year." The Mets aren't going to give him $50 million a year. They're not going to give him $40 million a year.If I guess this one right now, it ends at 30-31 million dollars a year.
"My guess is [a] three-year contract. Opt-outs after year one and two," he added. "Year one is $30 [million], year two is $27 [million], and year three is $25 [million]."
According to reports, Boras has recently put out a $93.3 million price on a three-year contract for Alonso.
Evan Roberts on the market demand for Pete Alonso
The Mets broke the bank in signing Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract in December. Mets broadcaster Evan Roberts claimed that the team will not have a similar mindset in their pursuit of Pete Alonso because there is nowhere near the same interest among other teams for him.
"You had multiple teams bidding on [Soto], which drove the price up," Roberts said. "Right now, it's just the Mets talking to Scott [Boras] about a Pete Alonso contract. You're bidding against yourself. Why'd you go to $50 million?
"It's not a bidding war," he added. "The reason that the Soto number got so high was that it was a bidding war. This is not a bidding war."
Alonso is a homegrown Mets superstar who was picked up in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He won 2019 National League Rookie of the Year after hitting 53 home runs during the campaign, setting a new MLB record.
