As the calendar changes to 2025, several notable free agents are yet to be signed. Big names such as Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried have landed massive deals this offseason.
As Spring Training approaches, stars such as Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman and Jack Flaherty are still seeking new deals. While baseball has a way of surprising us, these three players might have ideal spots already waiting for them.
3 bold predictions in MLB free agency that could happen in January 2025
Pete Alonso returns to the Mets
The New York Mets and Pete Alonso have been circling each other all offseason and it might simply be a matter of time before a new contract is agreed upon. The Mets made the biggest splash in free agency by landing Juan Soto on a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal, however, there are still a few questions lingering about the roster.
Despite being one of the top NL teams entering 2025, the New York Mets need to sort out the vacancy at first base. The club had been linked to a number of stars in free agency, but most of those players have already signed with a club.
Alonso is the top remaining free-agent first baseman who has spent his entire career with the Mets, so a reunion might be in the best interest of both parties.
Alex Bregman makes the move to Fenway Park
Alex Bregman is one of the most accomplished third basemen and he could be poised for a massive move to the AL East. The Boston Red Sox have been linked to Bregman all offseason and he could become the club's next major move of free agency.
There have been questions about the potential fit next to current third baseman Rafael Devers, however, a shift to first could be a possibility. Bregman could be the latest major move from the Red Sox front office which has already acquired the likes of Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet this offseason.
Jack Flaherty rounds out the Orioles rotation
The Baltimore Orioles have been looking to bolster their pitching rotation all offseason. While they were able to add Japanese veteran Tomoyuki Sugano in free agency, he is unproven in the majors, so they'll likely add a more established MLB arm.
Jack Flaherty could fit that bill. Even though the veteran struggled for the O's after being acquired by them at the 2023 trade deadline, he proved last season that he has plenty of life left in his arm.
Flaherty posted a 13-7 record with a 3.17 ERA with 194 strikeouts last year and could be a major addition to the Orioles heading into the new year.
