The ongoing free agency of Pete Alonso remains one of the top stories in baseball. The four-time All-Star has been one of the game's top home run hitters in recent years but he has yet to secure the long-term, lucrative deal that he and his agent Scott Boras have been looking for. However, there has been a significant update regarding his future with his long-time club.

According to former New York Mets general manager Jim Duquette, a source close to the situation has revealed that Alonso and his representation have reached out to the team. It is worth noting that Alonso and his reps have only made this deal with the Mets.

"According to league sources, Pete Alonso’s camp has offered the Mets a three-year deal with opt-outs. This deal is only available to the Mets right now," Duquette tweeted on Friday.

Despite being linked to several clubs this offseason, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and LA Angels, it appears that there is mutual interest for a reunion between Alonso and the Mets.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out for Alonso, as Duquette believes that it will help show his desire to join the Mets, even if it comes with an opt-out-laden agreement.

"He has a chance to put up big numbers and then decide if he wants to go back out on the free agent market or the Mets could try to sign him to a longer-term deal, something similar to what they tried to do last April," Duquette said on Friday, via MLB Network Radio.

Pete Alonso is coming off a rough 2024 season but could benefit from teaming up with Juan Soto

Alonso is coming off a disappointing 2024 season by his standards where he posted a .240 batting average with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs. Even though those numbers are nothing to scoff at, it was the not year that the first baseman was hoping for heading into free agency.

The addition of Juan Soto to the New York Mets lineup could present him with an opportunity to rack up numbers. This could help him in negotiations later on if he decides to opt out of his contract. If Alonso returns to the revamped Mets, the slugger could see a boost in his numbers in 2025.
