The signings of first basemen this offseason have been dramatic. One of the best available, Pete Alonso, is yet to sign a deal while one of the contenders to sign him, the Washington Nationals, went ahead and reportedly acquired Josh Bell on a one-year, $6 million deal.

Generally, a free agent class at a position starts with teams plucking the best talent from the top. However, Alonso, who sits on top, is still waiting to get the right price while his fellow first basemen like Paul Goldschmidt, Christian Walker and now Bell have signed deals, shortening the market for him.

Nonetheless, the agreement between Bell and the Nats caught fans by surprise as they reacted to the deal.

"Bro got sent back to hell," one fan reacted.
"Horrible signing @Nationals," one fan added.

Some reacted to the trade in relation to Pete Alonso.

"Pete Alonso still unemployed," another commented.
"Another possible Pete Alonso destination ❌" another fan wrote.
"Sounds like Pete Alonso is a Cub then," one fan predicted the next destination of the most sought after first baseman.
"LEAGUE SHATTERING," one fan wrote

Giants join Mets in Pete Alonso's sweepstakes

Going into the offseason, the Mets were expected to re-sign Pete Alonso. However, David Stearns has played this hand smartly, waiting for other free agents to sign with other teams, following which he could potentially land Alonso on a favorable deal.

The Mets have also reportedly offered a three-year, $90 million deal to the first baseman. Keeping him "on the radar" is the San Francisco Giants, according to sources of RotoBaller.

The Giants, who signed shortstop Willy Adames to the largest contract in their franchise history, may have the money to sign Alonso after they lost out to the Arizona Diamondbacks on signing starting ace Corbin Burnes. In case, the Giants fail to land Alonso also, they'll have LaMonte Wade Jr. playing their first base in 2025.

Another team that is freshly getting linked to Pete Alonso is the Seattle Mariners. However, it's just a rumor at the moment and the Mets are still the favorites to re-sign the "Polar Bear."
