Pete Alonso Update: All-Star slugger hints possible extension at Mets amid rumors of move away from Queens before trade deadline (IMAGN)

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is in the last year of his contract, and six weeks ago there was a good possibility he would be dealt to other teams. However, in the past month or so, the Mets have defied the odds and are going into the All-Star break occupying the last spot of the NL wild-card race.

This would, on the one hand, upgrade the Mets from complete sellers to buyers if the club can continue its good run after the All-Star break. As for Alonso, he would like to stay with the team. However, he understands that it will be up to the club to decide its future.

"I'm super happy to be a Met, super proud to be a Met," Alonso said Monday at Globe Life Field. "And, again, it's just been awesome. I'd love to stay, and I don't want to get traded. I love it. It's home." [via ESPN].

Talking about the impending trade deadline, Alonso said:

"Right now there's a lot that could happen [before the trade deadline] and whatever the front office and ownership decides to do, that's their prerogative. But, for me, my job is to do whatever I can to help win ball games every single day.
"And I love this organization. I love this city so I just want to do the best I can every single night for the guys in the clubhouse and fans."

Pete Alonso was among the favorites to win the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby for the third time in his career. Not to be the case, Alonso was one of the worst hitters at Globe Life Field on Monday, as the Mets star could only clobber 12 home runs, ranking him seventh just above Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who had 11 home runs to his name in the first round.

Alonso has previously won the MLB Home Run Derby two times. However, Monday just wasn't the day for the slugger.

Dodgers slugger Teoscar Hernandez went on to win the Derby, beating Kansas City Royals phenom Bobby Witt Jr. 14-13 in the final.

Nevertheless, on Tuesday, Pete Alonso will serve as a backup to Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper for the Midsummer Classic. This would be his fourth All-Star game as he continues to make his name in Mets threads.
