The Philadelphia Phillies have retained a vital piece of their pitching staff in Jose Alvarado. The lefty reliever will return to Philadelphia, where he had a successful spell over the last two seasons.
The two parties reached an agreement on Friday that will see Alvardo remain with the club through 2025. The Phillies will also have an option for the 27-year-old for 2026.
The move will provide some depth to a Philadelphia roster that is better known for its potent offense. Alvarado was a key member of last season's pennant winning team. The organization reached the World Series for the first time since 2009.
Phillies fans took to Twitter and could not contain their excitement after hanging on to one of the team's most dangerous relievers.
Much of the credit has to go to President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski. After just two seasons with the franchise, Dombrowski has transformed the roster. He has done well to retain the core of last year's team and rewarded several players with extensions.
The club have added Trea Turner, Taijuan Walker, Craig Kimbrel and Matt Strahm during the offseason. Add to that All-Stars like Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber, Zack Wheeler, and Aaron Nola, and this roster looks stacked

Jose Alvarado has been solid for the Philadelphia Phillies since joining in 2021 from the Tampa Bay Rays. The lefty is famous for his hard-to-hit sinkers. While he is known for his velocity, he has a four-pitch arsenal that also includes a cutter and a curveball.
Last season, he finished with a 3.18 ERA after 51 innings. During that stretch, he accumulated 81 strikeouts and finished with a strikeouts per nine innings rate of 14.3. Alvarado also made 12 appearances in the postseason, holding opponents to a .209 average. He struck out 14 hitters over 11.1 innings.
Overall, he has a 11-3 record and a 3.71 ERA since joining the Phillies.
Overcoming the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves in the National League East will not be easy. With this roster, however, the Phillies will look to make another deep playoff run in 2022, and may go all the way this time.
