The Philadelphia Phillies avoided arbitration with six key players including pitcher Ranger Suarez and key infield piece Bryson Stott. With the arbitration deadline looming, all teams had to strike deals with players who were eligible for arbitration or head into a hearing. Thankfully for the Phillies, they finalized deals with all six of their players.
Ranger Suarez is reportedly getting the highest pay. He is expected to earn $8.8 million for the 2025 season, as per insider Mark Feinsand. The starter is coming off a 14-8 season. He was one of the best pitchers in the league in the first half, pitching to a 2.76 ERA, but tapered away in the second with a 5.65 ERA. Still, he is a key part of the rotation and is expected to do better in his final year of arbitration.
Second baseman Bryson Stott, meanwhile, had a below-par season at the plate by his standards. The 27-year-old hit 57 RBIs that included 11 home runs. His averages of .245 and OPS of .671 were significantly down from his 2023 season where he hit .280 and .748, respectively. Stott is still on his path to growth in the MLB and is expected to get better as the years go by.
Phillies get back Alec Bohm and Jesus Luzardo
Last year, Alec Bohm took the Phillies to an arbitration hearing and emerged victorious, signing a $4 million deal. This year, having avoided the arbitration hassle, Bohm is set to receive $7.7 million from the franchise. The third baseman hit 97 RBIs in 2024 including 15 home runs at an average of .280 at the plate.
Besides Suarez, the Phillies also extended newly acquired pitcher Jesus Luzardo. The southpaw was part of the Miami Marlins last season. Luzardo and Paul McIntosh were traded to the Phillies in exchange for Starlyn Caba and Emarrion Boyd in the last week of December. Avoiding arbitration with his new team, Luzardo is expected to earn $6.225 million for the 2025 season.
The Phillies also picked up contracts of utility player Edmundo Sosa and outfielder Brandon Marsh for $3 million.
With most of their roster back from last year and a few key additions, the Phillies are expected to challenge for the NL East crown again. In 2024, their postseason run was cut short by the New York Mets who beat them in four games in the National League Division Series. They will hope for a deeper run and a shot at the World Series title this time around.
