Derek Jeter and actor Mathew McConaughey were star attractions during the Michigan Wolverines and Texas Longhorns clash in Week 2 of the college football season. The former Yankees shortstop was also the honorary captain for the home team at the The Big House in Ann Arbor.
Jeter grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His family moved there when he was very young. He played baseball for the Kalamazoo Central High School and was also named the USA Today High School Baseball Player of the Year in 1991. He enrolled in University of Michigan during the fall year of 1992 but later withdrew when he was selected by the Yankees in the MLB draft.
Since then, the Baseball Hall of Famer has visited his old stomping grounds to attend Wolverines' games. In 2016 he was made the honorary captain for the team by head coach Jim Harbaugh. Last week it was announced that he will be honorary captain for Saturday's game when the No.10 Wolverines face the No.3 Longhorns.
In a picture posted on Jeter's Instagram, the 50-year-old could be seen on the sidelines with Texas-born McConaughey. Jeter sported an ivory coloured Michigan hoodie while the Interstellar star was dressed in classic Texas-style brown leather jacket and hat.
Mathew McConaughey and Derek Jeter engage in fun banter
Derek Jeter made an appearance during the Big Noon Kickoff show on FOX. He was bold to predict that the Wolverines can pull off the biggest upset by beating the Longhorns at home. During the broadcast, the 14x All-Star received a special message from McConaughey, who had not yet arrived to Michigan Stadium.
"I don't know if I am going to make it there to be live on the show but I am hopping on a train then I am hopping on a boat, then I am rowing a canoe then I am jogging the last 18 miles and I will be there by game time. Jeter I hope today is going to be a long day for you Big Blue," McConaughey said in a recorded video.
"We re-routed his plane acutally," Jeter said jokingly on air.
This Wolverines/Longhorns clash is just the second time in history and first ever meeting between the two teams in the regular season. The teams met in the 2005 Rose Bowl, which Texas won 38-37.
