Freddie Freeman led the comeback for the Los Angeles Dodgers, providing a knockout blow in the form of a clutch extra-inning home run. His wife Chelsea beamed on social media, sharing the highlight of her husband's 383-foot game-sealing swing with a bevy of emojis: the Free emoji for her and her husband's last name and a bomb for how well Freeman struck the ball.
The Dodgers had rallied from a 2-0 deficit late in the game. The comeback began with Freeman, who drove in a run in the top of the eighth inning to put LA on the board.
Teoscar Hernandez scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth before Mookie Betts knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th. Freeman came in to clean it all up, knocking himself and Betts in to stretch the lead to three.
The New York Mets failed to score again and lost the opportunity to split the day-night doubleheader. The series opener had been rained out, but the Dodgers managed to outscore New York 5-2 on the day and win both games.
Freddie Freeman helps reverse shocking losing streak
Heading into the opening game of the doubleheader, the Los Angeles Dodgers had improbably lost five in a row. That included a sweep at the hands of the lowly Cincinnati Reds.
In the opening contest, Freeman himself went 2-3 in his at-bats, giving the Dodgers scoring opportunities. They didn't need much, as starter Gavin Stone blanked New York to earn the win.
Freeman's heroics extended the victory streak, beginning a new streak of two consecutive triumphs with the night game. Without his late-game at-bats, the Dodgers could have dropped to their sixth loss in seven games.
That upped his spectacular season numbers. He is now hitting with a 151 wRC+. He is also inching closer to a .300 batting average, as he's hitting .297 with a .400 on-base percentage as well.
