On Thursday, the New York Mets won the rubber game of the wild card series 4-2 against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. David Peterson, who has typically enjoyed success as a starter this season, was used as a closer this time, as he successfully defended his team's two-run lead to cue wild celebrations from the Orange and Blue corner. Following the victory, David's young son Callahan was pictured holding a banner to support his dad's team.

Despite the score showing a 'comfortable' two-run lead for the Mets in the end, the events on the pitch were anything but. With both starters Jose Quintana and Tobias Myers on top of their game, the game was scoreless at the halfway mark.

The deadlock was eventually broken by the hosts in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick hit back-to-back home runs to put the Brewers in the driving seat. With the Mets having struggled for hits all day and only two innings to play, it looked to all the world that it may be the end of the road.

However, the Mets had a ray of hope with two batters reaching base in the top of the ninth. That hope became something more tangible as Pete Alonso gave his team the lead with only one inning to go, hitting a three-run home run, before Starling Marte added some much-needed insurance with an RBI single. Eventually, Peterson came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and took care of business to secure qualification for New York.

David Peterson reflects on Mets' victory amid locker room celebrations

Playing as a closer in the victory on Thursday, David Peterson recorded his first-ever career save. He voiced his thoughts about the win to Steve Gelbs of SNY in the locker room, as he and his teammates celebrated qualification.

"It's unbelievable. What a game, tight all the way. The offense came through, and I just needed to close the door. I'm so proud of this group, and so happy to be moving on [to the next round]," Peterson said [0:06]
"The offence was unbelievable, they fought till the very end. The Brewers did a great job, they're a great team and they kept us at bay for eight innings. But, our offence came through in the end," Peterson added [0:38]

With qualification, the Mets set up an exciting five-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Ace Kodai Senga, who missed a large part of the season due to injury, has been named the starter for the opening game.

Mets fans will hope Senga can quickly get up to speed and match Cy Young hopeful Zack Wheeler's performance at the other end, as the New Yorkers look to take a crucial lead in the series against the NL East Champions.
