The Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to extend Bryan Reynolds before the season starts. They have seemingly set a deadline on Opening Day for the two sides to come to an agreement.

"Hearing Pirates have been trying to extend star CF Bryan Reynolds. Opening day seems to be a deadline. No word yet on Oneil Cruz or other young players." - @JonHeyman

The update brought Pirates fans out on social media, where they expressed their thoughts on the situation.

While some fans are hopeful the team can extend Bryan Reynolds, others aren't holding their breath. They don't have much faith in their front office to get a deal done.

"Please get it done," one fan tweeted.
"Like we haven't heard this before," another fan tweeted.

Other fans think Reynolds should take his talent elsewhere. They believe he'd be far better off playing for a contender. They don't think the Pirates will be competitive any time soon.

Reynolds requested a trade this offseason after he was unhappy with the team's initial contract extension. The two sides were far apart as the Pirates originally offered the All-Star outfielder a six-year, $80 million contract. Reynolds was searching for a nearly eight-year contract valued at $134 million.

If the Pirates don't want to lose out on Reynolds, they will have to up their initial offer. If not, Reynold's time in Pittsburgh may be over soon.

Reynold has been great for the Pittsburgh Pirates in his four seasons with the club. He was an All-Star in 2021 while hitting a career-high in triples (8). Last season, he topped another career-high, this time in home runs with 27.

The Pirates have had a couple of seasons to forget recently, as they have been rebuilding. They haven't been to the postseason since 2015 when they took on the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card.

During that time, they've been building up their farm system, and they did a pretty good job. Players like Ke'Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz have already shown the league their capabilities.

Canaan Smith-Njigba, brother of Ohio State University wide standout receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, has shown his power this spring. He hit .333 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. He played well enough to earn himself a spot on the Opening Day roster. He's going to be a player that fans should keep an eye on.

The Pirates are starting to put together a competitive team. However, they'll take a step backward if they can't come to an agreement with Bryan Reynolds. If the Pirates want to compete in the National League Central this year, they'll need Reynolds roaming the outfield.
