After signing Jesse Winker to a one-year deal on Thursday, the New York Mets agreed to another deal with reliever A.J. Minter, indicating the franchise has indeed moved on from free agent first baseman Pete Alonso and is using the surplus cash to sign bullpen pitchers.
The Mets deal with Minter is worth $22 million over two years. Minter spent his entire career with the Atlanta Braves before becoming a free agent this offseason. Last year, he posted a 2.62 ERA in 39 appearances.
The Mets fans shared their reactions on the deal, with some even mentioning Alonso's name.
"Prepping for life after Pete. Let Stearns cook," one fan commented.
"Where's Pete," another said.
Some fans believe the Mets overpaid for Minter.
"The Mets seriously overpaid for AJ Minter, $22M for two years is ridiculous!" another fan on X reacted to the deal.
"HOLY OVERPAY," another added.
Some were excited after the move.
"yesss, love this move! can’t wait to see him in action with the mets 💙⚾️" another added.
"Good a lefty in the pen was a must," another wrote.
"Meatball Minter… Mets fans will learn this name," one fan added.
Have the Mets moved on from Pete Alonso?
The Mets fans may not see Pete Alonso, aka "Polar Bear," guarding their first base in 2025. This comes after the contract negotiations between both parties couldn't find a middle ground.
For what it's worth, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Mets made a "last ditch effort" by offering him a contract worth $68 to $70 million over three years.
This is a downgraded offer from last June when the Mets tried to extend him on a seven-year, $158 million extension. This would have kept Alonso through his age-35 season. He is looking for something similar this offseason, but it seems his value in the market has deteriorated.
If not Alonso, the Mets would likely move third baseman Mark Vientos to first while the likes of Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuna would battle it out to get the third base job.
