The MLB Network unveiled its official ranking of the top 10 shortstops in baseball. The position is dominated by young stars and The Shredder ranked them in order. It has not been an uncontroversial list.
If fans are to be believed, this is one of the worst lists the MLB Network has done all year. They've already ranked several position groups and fans have reacted to them. This one was met with a lot of vitriol.
The MLB Network ranked the shortstops in this order: Gunnar Henderson, Corey Seager, Francisco Lindor, Bobby Witt Jr., Mookie Betts, Dansby Swanson, Carlos Correa, Elly De La Cruz, Willy Adames and Trea Turner. Fans were displeased.
"Anthony Volpe was third in WAR among all shortstops last year, and he is just 23. He should be on the list," one fan said.
"How is Bobby Witt not first? Guess fielding, baserunning weren't included. Even if it solely focused on hitting, 4 is too low," another fan wrote.
"The shredder is officially drunk," a fan commented.
"Witt at 4 is why I’ll never take the ppl at MLB Network serious… like at all… the orange juice after toothpaste type of list," another fan commented.
"Witt just had one of the greatest seasons at SS all time… also Volpe should be up here as one of the best defensive SS’s in the game with an average bat," one fan said.
Bobby Witt Jr.'s placement drove most of the outrage of fans.
The fWAR ranking of MLB shortstops looks a lot different
The MLB Network's The Shredder has a list of the top 10 shortstops, one that has been ripped to shreds in the comments. Based on Fangraphs' fWAR, the order would be different.
At the top is Bobby Witt Jr. after he had one of two seasons with double-digit fWAR. Witt was first in all of baseball with 10.4 and Gunnar Henderson was second with 8.0.
Francisco Lindor came in third after a 7.8 fWAR season and Elly De La Cruz's 6.4 was fourth on the list. They are followed by:
- Willy Adames, 4.8
- Corey Seager, 4.5
- Mookie Betts, 4.4
- Dansby Swanson, 4.3
- Trea Turner, 3.9
- Ezequiel Tovar, 3.7
This number is impacted by total games played, so players like Seager and Betts who missed time have a smaller total than they might have otherwise.
