Farm systems are essential for the development of MLB teams. They are normally comprised of teams in the Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A leagues, and provide a framework through which teams can develop skills or relegate existing players.
However, these farm systems are often looked over, and many baseball fans are unable to name even one franchise. Today, we are looking at some of the best farm systems around at the moment.
Best MLB Farm Systems in 2023
1. Baltimore Orioles
As is often the case, one of the worst teams in the MLB in 2022 has one of the most dynamic farm systems. Even with young talents like Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rustchmann ascending to the MLB, there is still plenty of skill within the organization.
"Franchy Cordero is already the greatest thing to ever happen to the Orioles organization." - Tyler Miliken
The O's signed former San Diego Padres outfielder Franchy Cordero to a minor league deal this offseason. Additionally, the Triple-A Norfolk Tides will also feature young talent like Connor Norby and Jordan Westburg, both of whom were signed in recent years for bonuses in excess of $1 million.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers
Former MLB star and Dodgers GM Brandon Gomes has lauded praise on his team's farm system. Gomes claims the group to be "one of the most talented I've ever seen."

Twenty-three-year-old Cuban Miguel Vargas hit .304 in Triple-A Oklahoma City last season with 17 home runs and 82 games. He will likely start the year at Triple-A but is likely to come up for big-league action. Outfielder James Outman, who went 6-for-13 with a home run in four games with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, is also a game-changer.
3. St. Louis Cardinals
Another team with a great farm system, the St. Louis Cardinals are making it work at all levels of their organization. However, most of their latent skills seem to be located in their Double-A team, the Springfield Cardinals.
"Have a night, Gordon Graceffo. No. 3 @Cardinals prospect tied his career high with 9 punchouts for the @Sgf_Cardinals" - MLB Pipeline
Outfielder Jordan Walker hit .306 with 22 stolen bases last season. Meanwhile, 22-year-old starter Gordon Graceffo posted an ERA of 3.94 in 18 starts with the Springfield Cardinals last year. It appears that the Cards will be using their indispensable top prospects from their farm systems very soon.
