In many ways, Yandy Diaz has been the most high-impact player for the Tampa Bay Rays this season. Although the club does not currently occupy a playoff spot, they might soon need to find a way to trudge forward without their All-Star first baseman.
After Diaz was absent from Friday night's game against the Yankees, the Rays disclosed that the Cuban was away dealing with a "personal matter." On Saturday morning, the club provided an update, claiming that Yandy Diaz would be moved to the restricted list, and out of the lineup indefinitely.
"Yandy Díaz goes yard on the first pitch of the game!" - MLB
In MLB, a player is sent to the restricted list for reasons that make him ineligible to perform his duties, be it for personal or legal reasons. When a player is on the restricted list, they are not paid and do not count towards a team's roster limits.
Diaz joins his teammate, Wander Franco, on the restricted list. Last season, Franco was placed on administrative leave after heinous accusations arose regarding a supposed inappropriate relationship with an underage girl. As his trial remains ongoing in his native Dominican Republic, the Rays placed Franco on the restricted list to start the 2024 season. The 23-year-old's last MLB appearance came against the Cleveland Guardians on August 17, 2023.
"#Rays fans fans definitely have a reason to be frightened about Yandy Diaz being placed on the restricted list, last year Wander Franco was placed on the restricted list for personal matter at first before a investigation was opened up into him. Hoping it is not the same situation." - Tampa Bay Sports Daily
While the reasons for Yandy Diaz's movement to the restricted list are unknown, Tampa Bay Rays fans are concerned that it could be a legal issue. In the second year of his three-year, $24 million commitment, the Rays pledged to pay Wander Franco $182 million over eleven years in 2021. Now, it is unsure if or when either will return to MLB.
At the time of his placement on the restricted list, Yandy Diaz was hitting .273/.329/.396 with 8 home runs and 46 RBIs. Curtis Mead has been recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill in the newly opened roster spot.
Yandy Diaz situation is rife with uncertainty
Following the Rays' 6-1 loss to the New York Yankees in the Bronx on Friday, Tampa manager Kevin Cash was pressed on the Diaz situation. However, the two-time Manager of the Year remained tight-lipped, claiming:
"(It is a) personal matter. Probably leave it at that."
Although the Rays are not a playoff-contending team, Diaz's move invites a lot of uncertainty to an organization that has already been down this road before.
