Red Sox ace Lucas Giolito makes feelings known on Garrett Crochet reunion in Boston

Left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet was traded to the Boston Red Sox earlier this month, joining Lucas Giolito. During his four years with the Chicago White Sox, the lefty recorded a career-best season in the MLB last year.

Giolito worked with Crochet once before when both pitchers used to play for Chicago, and shared his excitement with the reunion on the "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast.

"As everybody could see from last year, transitioning from injuries to then bullpen and then starter," Giolito said. "And he became an elite left-handed starter. I think he's only gonna get better, strong. Really excited to have him on the team to help lead the staff."

"I feel like I'm gonna have some stuff to learn because the last time I played with him was when he was coming off a Tommy John. And coming back from that kind of injury and dealing with setbacks and things like that, it can put you in a different kind of mental place.

"I saw that but the one thing that he alway maintained was his determination of becoming a starting pitcher. Even when the organization he played for used to show doubts, he always internally was just like, 'No that's what I'm gonna be doing and I'm gonne be doing it at an extremely high level.'

"I didn't get to witness it first-hand except for when he pitched against us last year. But I'm looking forward to seeing his process, his work ethics. I've heard amazing things... That's what I'm most excited for. A guy who takes it seriously, works really hard."

The Chicago White Sox selected Garrett Crochet in the 2020 MLB Draft, and he made his major league debut the same year. He battled injuries in 2023 before winning the AL Comeback Player of the Year award with a strong season in 2024.

Crochet and Lucas Giolito played together in the White Sox organization for almost three years.

Boston Red Sox's acquisition of Garrett Crochet is their biggest move in years. In his introductory press conference earlier this month, the pitcher revealed his excitement about playing for Boston, where David Ortiz is a legend.

"I grew up watching Big Papi, so it's gonna be a surreal moment to play where he played," he said.
