Each year, the MLB Network's analytics and analyst input metrics come up with "The Shredder," where they rank all the top MLB players in each position. This year, Cleveland Guardians' Jose Ramirez was named as the top third baseman in the league.
As per Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer and MLB Network analyst Mike Lowell's comments on Wednesday, Ramirez's unique abilities as an all-around hitter with contact hitting, slugging percentage and baserunning make him the best in the hot corner. He also puts in strong efforts in defense. Lowell compared the veteran infielder to not just the current crop of 3B but everyone in MLB history and he feels that Ramirez has enough to become a Hall of Famer.
"I tried to pick apart something he doesn't do well and I couldn't find anything... He leads them in stolen bases, in slugging and home runs. You want a combination of that. Find something. He's an above average defender. There's nothing he does wrong. What I love, switch hitter, hits well, from the right side and the left side... I mean, he's fantastic. He's the creme de la creme of this position...
"You compare him to the third basemen, but then you can compare him to all the Major League Baseball and he's top 10 in MVP voting seven out of the last eight years. So it's not a three-year window, it's not a two-year window. He's done it over and over for a good eight years. This is a future Hall of Famer we're looking at right now. No question," Lowell, a former third baseman, said.
So far in his career, Jose Ramirez has hit .279 with an outstanding OPS of .856. His 864 career RBIs include 255 home runs and at 32 years of age, he might have at least six seasons left in him to add to those numbers.
Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado also among 10-best MLB third basemen
Highly touted MLB free agent Alex Bregman and trade prospect Nolan Arenado were named third and seventh, respectively, on "The Shredder's" list. Both the 3B have been linked to each other this offseason with many analysts believing that Arenado's trade depends on Bregman's free agency and new destination.
Teams like the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and New York Mets have looked at possible deals with both former Gold Glove winners at the position. The Red Sox seem to be the closest with insider Ken Rosenthal stating the team could pivot to the Cardinals veteran if they are unable to get Bregman.
“It’s really difficult to read the Red Sox right now in my opinion,” Ken Rosenthal said on “Foul Territory” on Thursday. “We’ve talked about this quite a bit, they should be signing Alex Bregman and if they don’t sign Alex Bregman maybe at that point they would be interested in Arenado.”
It remains to be seen how this plays out with less than a month to go for Spring Training.
