The Boston Red Sox have already pulled off arguably the biggest blockbuster trade of the offseason by trading for Garrett Crochet. A new report suggests it might not be the only big trade they make heading into the 2025 season.

Nolan Arenado has been linked to the Red Sox and he is one of the biggest trade chips remaining on the market. The Red Sox have some positional logjams regarding where Arenado would play, but they remain interested.

MLB insider Jon Morosi said:

"I do believe the Red Sox want to make at least one more significant trade. It could be for Arenado, it could be for an arm like Sandy Alcantara... I was told by a source last night that it's not necessarily Boston or bust for Arenado."

Boston has also reportedly expressed interest in signing Alex Bregman. In terms of trading for Arenado, he would have to waive his no-trade clause to join the Sox, but Morosi reported that Arenado is more open to waiving it now.

Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins is an option, although an unlikely one. He is the only player aside from Eric Wagaman on the Marlins' entire roster that is not in arbitration, so it's unlikely that they'd trade the only player they have locked down beyond the 2025 season.

Red Sox working on Garrett Crochet extension

Last year, Garrett Crochet may have talked his way into remaining with the Chicago White Sox. Before the deadline, there were reports that he said he didn't want to be traded anywhere unless they extended him. He intimated that he wouldn't pitch in the playoffs without an extension.

The Red Sox just traded for him this offseason, but they're heeding his prior words. Crochet and the Sox have already been in contact on a multi-year extension. They are currently not close to an agreement yet.

Crochet has two years of team control remaining, and the arbitration deadline is nearing. They can sign a one-year deal to avoid that and extend later, though. The Minnesota Twins signed Pablo Lopez to a four-year deal when he was roughly at the same service time as Crochet is now, so there's a framework from that deal a few years back.
