The Athletics are moving away to Las Vegas, leaving behind Oakland, as they played their last game inside Oakland Coliseum on Thursday—winning against the Texas Rangers.
Amid all the frustration and protest surrounding the move, an old video resurfaced, which includes a serious allegation against MLB commissioner Rob Manfred while also involving late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler. It came from Wayne Coy, who said it on the "Locked on A's" podcast on Nov. 17, 2023, one day removed from owners unanimously approving A's relocation.
"There were six or seven owners that were literally discussing a no vote. Unfortunately, the leader of that group (Peter Seidler) passed away on Tuesday. He was the owner of the San Diego Padres," Coy said.
"But what really happened was the commissioner rallied the troops and said, 'Look, we've got the absolute worst PR campaign ever, potentially going into a brand new market that our league has ever endured. I need everybody in this room to promise that they're going to be on the same page.' So that's why you've got a unanimous vote."
"Rob Manfred can rot, this is disgraceful," one fan commented
"People actually believe Rob Manfred is a good commissioner," one fan made a sarcasm
"Wow, that’s f**king despicable. Fuck John Fisher and Rob Manfred," another fan wrote.
"BRO WHAT?! Rot in hell, Rob Manfred," one wrote.
"Holy cow that’s despicable," another said.
"I wonder what strongarm went on for the 7 or 8 owners to change their minds and go along with Manfred," one wrote.
Seidler, who was allegedly against the move of A's relocation from Oakland, had the support of 7-8 owners. The allegation seems to be consistent with the timeline, as Seidler died on Nov. 14, 2023 and two days later, MLB owners seemingly approved unanimously in favor of the relocation.
Jeff Passan in strong disagreement with A's relocation
With Oakland Athletics shifting to Las Vegas, reactions are pouring in from all corners reacting to the relocation. Joining them Thursday was well-known MLB insider Jeff Passan, who was in strong disagreement with how everything panned out in Oakland.
"The Oakland A’s were killed by greed. Do not allow the people responsible for this to spin it any other way. John Fisher did not have to move this team. Major League Baseball and its owners did not need to be complicit in it. This was a choice. A wrong one. History will sneer," Passan wrote on X.
With the A's lease expiring to play in the Oakland Coliseum, the team will head to play at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California, beginning in the 2025 season. In the meantime, the Las Vegas stadium is expected to be built, and the franchise could have a new fanbase to embrace by 2028.
