The New York Yankees topped the Colorado Rockies 10-3, bringing their record to an AL East-leading 77-54. They could become the first team to receive a bye this season.
The Yankees won the series 2-1, and most of Sunday's runs came from the home runs hit by Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres as the three went back-to-back-to-back, impressing WFAN hosts Jerry Recco and Chris Lopresti. But they cautioned against being overly impressed by the Yankees' calling card, their prodigious power.
“It was fun to watch yesterday. It’s a nice sun-splashed Sunday afternoon in the Bronx, they’re hitting home runs all over the place but it’s the Rockies,” Lopresti said (Timestamp: 2:16). “The Rockies are God-awful. … It’s fun along the way.
"It beats losing or watching teams that can’t score like the (Seattle) Mariners. … So, it certainly beats that, but we’ve seen the MO from the Yankees. … I’ve got to see it in the big moments against the better pitching staffs.”
The Rockies (48-82) are at the bottom of the NL West. They have a 5.53 ERA (30th), a BAA of .287 (30th), a WHIP of 1.5 (30th) and several stats that are either last or near last.
Sportscaster believes in the Yankees to win World Series
With little more than a month left before the postseason begins, the Yankees are almost guaranteed a playoff spot. However, with the Baltimore Orioles (76-56) trailing them closely, winning the AL East will still be tough.
However, the Yankees are in a position to make a run to win the World Series.
"Aside from (the Houston Astros), there is not a team in Major League Baseball that would scare me in terms of the Yankees. … I still feel pretty good with the Yankees (against any NL team in the World Series)," Jerry Recco said.
"You look at the American League and what they have to get through. The Astros … have found it. That is the one team that, if they don’t get picked off, that would concern me.
"Other than that, to me, this is the Yankees' year. And if it's not this year, then when?”
The Yankees last won a World Series when during the tenure of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez in 2009. Their roster changed significantly over the years, but they've never reached the World Series stage since then.
The closest they came to that was in the AL Championship Series in 2010, 2012, 2017, 2019 and 2022. Last year, they also missed their first postseason since 2017. However, this season they could redeem all of these by winning the ultimate prize: the World Series.
