Late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler's widow, Sheel Seidler, has filed a lawsuit against her brothers-in-law, Matthew and Robert, accusing them of serious misconduct. The suit, filed on Monday, alleges fiduciary breaches of trust, conversion, fraud, and egregious acts of self-dealing.
At the heart of the legal battle is control of the Padres. Peter Seidler's wife Sheel is contesting the decision by Matthew and Robert to transfer control of the team to their fourth brother, John, bypassing her in the process.
Amid this, the Padres broadcaster Darren Smith shared his thoughts on the situation. Smith addressed the entire situation as tragic because he didn't want to see the family breaking down like this on a public forum, especially as he worked with Peter Seidler.
"But I think more than anything else, you know, thinking about this family going through this very publicly as they have, you know, thinking about Peter's children and, you know, what he's meant. I, you know, I just, I hate everything about it, you know, I hate everything about it." (5:20)
Moreover, Smith also shed some light on Peter Seidler's fourth brother, John, and his relationship with the staff.
"You know, when the story broke that John Seidler was going to be the control person for the Padres, you know, out of habit, I, you know, I mean, I'm not involved. I'm not currently working for a company where I have to, you know, talk about this stuff, but out of habit, I kind of said, hey, who's John, you know, to people who do work there, or who have worked there. And everybody shrugged.
"This isn't somebody that we saw, you know, down there on the field before games or after games or what have you. You know, these aren't people, these are kind of names that, you know, that I think, you know, even those that were working there that spent countless hours with Peter, you know, would tell you like, you got me, man. Like, you got me. I don't, I'm not, I just, you know, I'm not clear who John is."
As per Smith, many Padres front office staff had not developed a working relationship with John Seidler.
Peter Seidler's brother Matt doesn't see any "merit" in the lawsuit filed by Sheel Seidler
Sheel Kamal Seidler has decided to fight her battle in court regarding the ownership of the MLB team. Seidler claimed that her late husband Peter Seidler mentioned his wish for Sheel to become the team's control person, later followed by his children.
Matt Seidler gave his opinions through a statement shared by his spokesperson, where he alleged that Sheel herself saw John Seidler as the "best control person of the Padres" back in May. Moreover, he also talked about how he doesn't see anything of substance in the lawsuit.
"The complaint filed by Sheel Seidler, the widow of Peter Seidler, is entirely without merit," the statement read. "Peter had a clear estate plan. The plan specifically named three of his nine siblings, with whom he had worked closely for many decades, as successor trustees of his trust, and Peter himself prohibited Sheel from ever serving as trustee."
Peter Seidler's wife Sheel wants Matt Seidler to back off from his position as the Padres' trustee and also wants a receivership to take possession of the trust property. Moreover, she's also looking for compensation for actual and exemplary damages, in addition to the attorney fees throughout the trial process.
