San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin expressed some frustration with Yu Darvish's usage in the World Baseball Classic, where he is playing for Team Japan. Going into the tournament, many fans and teams were worried about their pitchers being overworked, but the opposite is happening. Darvish has pitched five innings in the tournament, less than the team had hoped for.

Yu Darvish is arguably the best starting pitcher on the Padres. Many expect him to be the Opening Day starter. This is now in jeopardy if the team does not feel he is ready to pitch upwards of six consecutive innings. No matter how well players practice, it always takes time to get fully into game shape.

Dennis Lin of The Athletic shared the manager's concerns via Twitter:

Considering the San Diego Padres have championship aspirations this season, they need to hit the ground winning. If the World Baseball Classic creates a hurdle that could have been avoided, fans and the team will not be very understanding. Especially in the wake of the injury to New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz.

This is part of the inherent risk of players leaving their MLB teams during Spring Training. For some, the opportunity to represent their country is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that cannot be passed up. For MLB teams, it is more time that they don't have their top players available. The work that gets put in during Spring Training pays dividends all season.

Yu Darvish is a core player for the star-studded San Diego Padres, and they need him at his best. With the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division, a battle for a Wild Card spot is not out of the question. If they are able to surpass the Dodgers, it will be thanks to a complete team effort.

The San Diego Padres are worried about their star pitcher while he's away, and it is hard to blame them.

Should the San Diego Padres have allowed so many star players to play in the World Baseball Classic?

Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Yu Darvish all played in this year's World Baseball Classic. An argument could be made that they are the team's three most important players. Having them all absent during Spring Training was obviously worth the risk to them, but it could have negative side effects.

The primary side effect may be that Darvish is unable to pitch at the rate he needs to be able to by Opening Day.
