The San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees kicked off the 2023 MLB season on Thursday. Gerrit Cole and Logan Webb were spectacular for their teams on the mound. Webb struck out 12 while Cole fanned 11.
The Yankees' offense proved to be too much for the Giants, who lost 5-0 in their home opener. Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres blasted home runs while the Giants failed to get their bats going. Thairo Estrada was the only Giants player with multiple hits in the ballgame.
Seven starters went hitless for the Giants. Estrada and Roberto Perez were the only batters that could get anything going against the Yankees.
This isn't the start that the team envisioned. They're going to need more from their offense moving forward. You can't watch your starting pitcher strike out 12 batters and give him zero run support.
"Score a run challenge" one fan challenge.
"This team is going nowhere" another fan tweeted.
The San Francisco Giants did not leave a strong first impression on their fans. It felt like they were running through the motions against the New York Yankees.
Fans are bracing themselves for a long season. If this is how their offense will be all year, they'll get buried in the National League West.
The San Francisco Giants got a taste of what the New York Yankees can do this season
The New York Yankees put up five runs on eight hits against the Giants. They had seven starters who recorded a base hit, with Aaron Judge being the only player with multiple hits.
Only two starters for the Yankees failed to get a hit, Oswaldo Cabrera and Anthony Volpe. With the springs they had, expect that to change quickly.
Gerrit Cole did exactly what he needed to do. The right-hander pitched six innings of shutout baseball, giving up just three hits and striking out 11 batters. The Yankees went to Wandy Peralta and Jonathon Loaisiga in the seventh inning, and then young reliever Ron Marinaccio to pitch the eighth and ninth innings.
It was a statement victory for the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees look like the real deal. Their lineup is loaded with power, and they can score runs in bunches. Don't be surprised if this is how they perform all season long.
