Monday night was special for Tommy Edman as he made his season debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He missed much of the season after undergoing wrist surgery during the offseason.
Edman was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Dodgers ahead of the trade deadline, giving him another opportunity. However, this seems a lot more special than the one in St. Louis.
Edman's mom grew up in the Los Angeles area and was a fan of the Blue Crew. He shared that sentiment with reporters ahead of his debut against the Seattle Mariners on Monday via Doug McKain.
"Yeah, she grew up in LA, she's got a lot of family in LA still, and I grew up in San Diego, but like she said, she was a big-time Dodgers fan," Tommy Edman said.
Maureen Kwak, Edman's mother, was likely thrilled to hear her son was traded to LA. It made for one special debut as Edman had a ton of family in attendance against Seattle.
"She followed them even when she went to college in Massachusetts, so it's really special, especially for her and her side of the family. We'll have some people out here tonight who I know are very excited to watch me play in Dodger blue" Edman continued.
Tommy Edman gets a knock in his debut with the Dodgers
It has been a while since Tommy Edman faced big-league pitching. Stepping back into the box after taking as much time off as he did could be hard, but he was impressive in his first game back.
Edman faced a tough matchup as the Mariners Bryan Woo the ball to start the game. He has been impressive, alongside the rest of Seattle's starters, compiling a 2.12 ERA across 15 starts.
He did not have any success against Woo, grounding out and flying out in his first two at-bats. However, his luck changed when Seattle handed Yimi Garcia the ball out of the bullpen.
Edman was able to get his first hit of the season in the seventh inning, hitting a single to center field. Now, he has gotten the monkey off his back.
Shortly after getting his first knock, Edman showed off his wheels, stealing his first base of the season. He looks to finally be healthy, which could pose a threat to the rest of the league.
