Shohei Ohtani is having an incredible season in his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Japanese superstar became the fastest player to complete a 40-40 campaign and the first DH to achieve the feat.
Last week, Ohtani established himself as the inaugural member of the 50-50 club after hitting his 50th home run and earning his 50th stolen base of the season in the same game.
The Dodgers, who had the day off on Monday, have already earned a playoff spot. Ohtani has a tally of 53 home runs and 55 stolen bases for the year. Therefore, the question now remains if Ohtani can get the remaining seven home runs and five steals he needs in the last six games of the regular season to reach the previously unthinkable 60-60 mark.
Taking into consideration all that Ohtani has achieved in his unbelievable career and how he has been performing on the field over the last 30 days, it is hard to rule that out.
The San Diego Padres will be the visitors for the final home series at Dodger Stadium, which gets underway on Tuesday evening. Shohei Ohtani does not have particularly good numbers against their divisional rival and has managed just five extra-base hits, including two home runs. Nevertheless, he is batting .284/.359/.612 at home this season with 25 homers, 67 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.
The Colorado Rockies will be Ohtani's final opposition, with the final three games of the season set to be played at Coors Field. Ohtani has an excellent record against them, having batted 30-78 with eight home runs, 22 RBIs and seven stolen bases over his career. He has three home runs and 10 RBIs in 11 games on the road against the Rockies.
Shohei Ohtani's scorching hot September
Aside from his 53 home runs and 55 steals, Shohei Ohtani has a .301/.383/.640 slash line for the season. He leads the National League in total bases, extra-base hits, slugging, OPS, home runs, RBIs and runs scored.
Moreover, Ohtani is swinging a red-hot bat this month while racking up steals at a rapid pace. Ohtani is batting .354/.424/.756 in September with a 1.180 OPS. He has recorded 14 extra-base hits, including nine home runs, and 25 RBIs, along with 12 stolen bases in 20 games.
Therefore, Ohtani is within touching distance of a 60-60 season.
