Despite their 4-2 win over the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday, there was concern among the Los Angeles Dodgers faithful, as Shohei Ohtani suffered a partial left shoulder dislocation while attempting a play.
The Dodgers DH was trying to steal a base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ohtani had reached base after a walk from Clay Holmes. With Mookie Betts at the plate and two outs in the inning, he sprinted to second but was picked off by Yankees catcher Austin Wells. He appeared to land awkwardly while sliding.
Video replays showed that Ohtani's trailing left shoulder jammed against the ground. He immediately laid out on the ground near second base in pain as Dodgers manager Dave Roberts asked for the trainer. Ohtani left the dugout and went into the clubhouse immediately after.
Roberts explained that Shohei Ohtani had suffered a subluxation - partial dislocation - and will undergo further inspection on Sunday. The Dodgers skipper added that there was enough range of motion in his arm to be hopeful of a positive outcome.
“He had a little left shoulder subluxation. We’re going to get some tests at some point tonight or tomorrow, and then we’ll know more in the next couple of days,” Roberts said.
"The strength was great. The range of motion good, so we’re encouraged. But obviously I can’t speculate because (he didn't) get the scans yet. So once we have the scans, we’ll know more. But again, with the strength, the range of motion good, that’s certainly a positive.”
Dave Roberts expects Shohei Ohtani to be in Dodgers lineup in New York
Dave Roberts was also asked whether he felt that Shohei could make the Dodgers lineup for the next game on the East Coast on Monday and whether there are any plans in case he's unavailable.
Roberts responded by saying that he hopes Ohtani will remain in the lineup.
“I’m not there,” Roberts said. “I’m expecting him to be there. I’m expecting him to be in the lineup.”
Shohei Ohtani's absence would be a huge blow for Los Angeles, which is looking to close out the two remaining wins.
His sheer presence on the field is enough to necessitate action plans from the opposition, as was the case in Game 1 when Aaron Boone brought on Nestor Cortes to face Ohtani. Even though Ohtani missed out, Freddie Freeman homered against Cortes for the win.
