Shohei Ohtani's postseason legend continued as he reached yet another milestone. The Los Angeles Dodgers star, along with his teammate Max Muncy, set a new team record for most bases reached safely in a single postseason series.
Baseball's modern-day unicorn etched his name into Dodgers history in Game 6 of the NLCS against the New York Mets by reaching base for the 17th time in the series. His teammate Max Muncy achieved the same feat shortly after.
As noted by MLB statistician and historian Sarah Langs on X (formerly Twitter), Shohei Ohtani and Muncy's tallies in this year's NLCS surpassed the previous record of 15, held by Corey Seager in the 2020 World Series against the Rays, Manny Ramirez in the 2008 NLCS against the Phillies and Jim Gilliam in the 1955 Fall Classic with the then-Brooklyn Dodgers against the then-New York Giants.
Both Ohtani and Muncy shattered the record as the Dodgers eliminated the New York Mets in Game 6 of this year's NLCS.
Shohei Ohtani, along with Darvish and Yamamoto, draws massive viewing numbers in Japan
The Game 5 NLDS contest between the Dodgers and the Padres attracted record-breaking numbers not only in the US but also in Japan. In the US, the game drew 8.4 million viewers on FOX and its affiliated channels, marking the highest peak since the 2009 ALCS between the Yankees and Angels.
The game's viewership numbers were even more impressive in Japan. According to the MLB, the game was streamed by 12.9 million people in Shohei Ohtani's home country.
With Japan’s population at roughly 123 million, that only means about 10% of the nation watched the game.
While Ohtani’s star power undoubtedly drew attention, the game also featured a historic first: a matchup between two of Japan’s most celebrated pitchers, Yu Darvish and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
